Clinical Tips

Achieving impeccable results with IPS e.max restorations begins with meticulous preparation. The following guidelines provide a structured approach to ensure optimal fit, aesthetics, and longevity of the restoration:

Anterior Full-Coverage Crowns:

Chamfer Preparation: Requires a chamfer with 1.5–2 mm facial reduction, 1–1.5 mm lingual contact clearance, 1.5–2 mm incisal reduction, and 1–1.5 mm reduction at the gingival margin. Ensure rounded internal line angles. It is essential to ensure proper preparation of chamfer margins, especially interproximally, to allow the appropriate bulk of porcelain.

Shoulder Preparation: Opt for a shoulder with 1 mm lingual reduction, 2 mm incisal reduction, 1.5 mm labial reduction, and a 1 mm 360° rounded shoulder.

Inlays and Onlays:

  • Ensure an isthmus width of 1.5–2 mm.
  • Aim for a 1–1.5 mm wide gingival floor.
  • Rounded internal line angles and butt joint margins are crucial for optimal fit and durability.

Veneers:

  • Aim for a uniform preparation and lingual reduction to enhance strength.
  • Use a medium-grit round-ended diamond to join depth cut grooves, ensuring a uniform preparation and porcelain thickness of at least 1 mm.
  • Angle the diamond to eliminate undercuts and establish a butt joint on the lingual aspect of the preparation.
  • The incisal edge should be rounded to eliminate sharp line angles.

Adjustments and polishing:

If there's a need to make adjustments to the ceramic, it's imperative to first secure it in place through cementation or bonding. Once affixed, utilize a fine diamond, ensuring the presence of water and air to maintain a cool temperature on the crown. For final contouring of the ceramic, employ a soft pink polishing wheel combined with a high-quality diamond polishing compound.
