Elevating Prosthetic Solutions
Implant-retained overdentures represent a revolutionary step in dental prosthetics, offering patients a blend of stability, comfort, and aesthetics. These overdentures, anchored tightly to implants, provide a secure fit, reducing the common issues associated with traditional dentures.
At Boris Dental Labs, we specialize both bar and ball implant-retained overdentures. Bar Retained Overdentures utilize a custom-fitted metal bar anchored to implants, providing a stable foundation for the denture. In contrast, Ball Retained Overdentures employ a ball-and-socket mechanism, allowing the denture to snap onto implants, offering a natural feel and easy adaptability. Both designs prioritize patient comfort, functionality, and aesthetics.
Benefits of Bar Retained Overdentures
- Distributed Load: The bar evenly distributes occlusal forces across the implants, reducing stress on individual implants.
- Versatility: Suitable for both maxillary and mandibular applications.
- Stability: The rigid bar structure ensures a snug fit, minimizing movement and enhancing comfort.
- Aesthetics: Allows for a palateless design in maxillary overdentures, enhancing comfort and taste sensation.
- Enhanced Hygiene: Designed for easy removal, allowing patients to maintain optimal oral hygiene.
Ball (Locator) Retained Overdentures
- Ease of Use: Snap-on design facilitates easy insertion and removal by the patient.
- Low Profile: The design is inherently less bulky, providing a more natural feel.
- Customizable Retention: Allows for adjustable retention levels to suit individual patient needs.
- Minimal Maintenance: Fewer components mean reduced maintenance and simpler repairs.
- Enhanced Hygiene: Designed for easy removal, allowing patients to maintain optimal oral hygiene.
- Tissue Support: Offers additional tissue support, distributing the load more evenly, especially beneficial in cases with limited implants or bone.
- Stability: Direct attachment to implants ensures a secure fit, reducing movement and discomfort associated with traditional denture wear.

Clinical Tips
Recommended restorative sequence for implant retained overdentures
1. Impression taking – Traditional
- Remove the healing abutments and replace swiftly with open- or closed-tray impression copings
- Ensure the impression copings are seated correctly via a radiograph.
- Record the impression with light body PVS around the implant coping and fill the impression try with medium/heavy body.
- Submit to the laboratory.
Impression taking – Digital
- Remove the healing abutments and promptly attach the scan bodies specific to the implant system
- Ensure the scan bodies are fully seated. Some clinicians opt to take a radiograph for verification.
- Using your intraoral scanner, initiate the scanning process- ensuring the entire scan body is captured.
- Continue scanning the opposing arch and then record the bite registration.
- Review the digital impression for clarity and completeness. Ensure all pertinent areas are captured without distortion.
- Export the digital impression in the appropriate format (often .STL) and submit to the laboratory
2. Jaw Relation Records and shade selection
- Remove healing abutments
- Tighten locator abutments
- Seat the bite block – pressure may be required to engage the attachments
- Achieve accurate jaw relation records using conventional denture techniques
- Remove the bite blocks and locator abutments
- Replace healing abutments
- Put locator abutments on to the correct locations on the model
- Take impressions of the opposing dentition and the current denture
- Select shade and mould of teeth
3. Trial Set up
- remove healing abutments
- tighten locator abutments into appropriate implants and seat the denture base with the teeth in wax
- Evaluate the VDO, CR, aesthetics, occlusion, phonetics and midline.
- Remove trial denture and locator abutments
- Place locator abutments back on the model
- Reseat and tighten the healing abutments
4. Final prosthesis
