Clinical Tips

Preparation Guidelines:

  • The ideal occlusal space is 1.25 mm, however a minimum of 0.7mm is acceptable.
  • Favour chamfer or modified shoulder margins to achieve the best fit.
  • Axial walls should be designed to be convergent, ensuring there are no undercuts.
  • It's essential to structure the preparation in three distinct planes.
  • For preparations that have margins at or below the gum line, gingival retraction is crucial to obtain a clear impression.

Bonding:

  • For retentive preparations: Traditional cements like glass ionomer are recommended.
  • For less retentive preparations: Adhesive resin cements are advised.

Adjustments:

  • The ideal thickness to maintain the full strength of Ultratranslucent Zirconia is between 0.7 mm (minimum) and 1.25 mm (optimal). Be cautious, especially when working on bridge connector areas, to prevent potential breakage. Adjustments on crowns with a thickness of 0.7mm should be avoided, instead consider adjustments on the opposing tooth.
  • For adjustments, use a fine-grit diamond bur with gentle pressure. This approach minimizes the risk of inducing microfractures.
  •  For occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth and lingual surfaces of anterior teeth, a football-shaped bur is most effective.
  •  For adjusting cusps or making proximal contacts, a tapered bur is recommended.
  •  For tasks like adjusting a cusp, creating a fossa, or establishing endodontic access, a round bur is ideal.

 Polishing

  • For optimal results, it's essential to use a systematic approach when polishing Ultratranslucent Zirconia restorations.
  • Start with a coarse polishing tool to smooth out any abrasions or roughness from the adjustment process.
  • Progress to an intermediate polishing tool to refine the surface and enhance the shine.
  • Conclude with a fine polishing tool to achieve a high-gloss finish.
  • For areas that are challenging to access, consider using specialized polishing tools or discs to ensure a consistent and smooth finish across the restoration.
